Newsfrom JapanSports Society
Tokyo, July 20 (Jiji Press)--Most of Japanese people are interested in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics, but a majority of them think watching the quadrennial sports events on television is enough, a Jiji Press survey revealed Friday.
In the opinion poll conducted earlier this month, 80.1 pct of respondents answered that they are very or somewhat interested in the Tokyo Games in summer 2020, while only 19.4 pct said otherwise.
But when asked if they want to actually go to see Olympic and Paralympic events including the opening and closing ceremonies, 53. 4 pct said "negative," outnumbering those who hope to do so, accounting for 45.6 pct.
As reasons for not going out, 69.7 pct said watching the events on TV is enough, 42.2 pct noted event places are too far to visit, and 15.7 pct voiced heatstroke concerns.
Meanwhile, 44.2 pct of the potential spectators said there will be no more opportunities for them to watch Olympic and Paralympic events in Japan. They are followed by 43.7 pct wishing to witness performances of the world's top athletes and the establishment of new world records, and 41.9 pct expecting the thrill they can experience only when viewing sports games on site.
