Economy

Tokyo, Aug. 1 (Jiji Press)--Major Japanese nonfinancial companies logged year-on-year growth of 4.2 pct in their combined group net profits in April-June and a 4.9 pct rise in sales, a Jiji Press survey has shown.

Of 1,297 nonfinancial companies that are listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange's first section and release group earnings for April-June, 548, or 42 pct, have announced their scorecards for the latest quarter by Wednesday.

Many manufacturers enjoyed earnings growth against the background of an expanding global economy, although some voiced concerns over U.S.-China trade friction.

Komatsu Ltd. <6301> saw its April-June group sales and net profit reach record heights thanks to growth in sales of construction machinery in North America and Asia.

Electronics maker Sony Corp. <6758> and machinery giant Hitachi Ltd. <6501> each posted a record-high net profit.
