Japan, N. Korea Foreign Chiefs Hold Brief Talks in Singapore

Politics

Singapore, Aug. 3 (Jiji Press)--Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono had a brief conversation with his North Korean counterpart, Ri Yong Ho, in Singapore on Friday night.

This was the first contract between Japanese and North Korean ministers since U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un held a historic summit in Singapore on June 12.

Kono is believed to have explained Japan's basic policy of providing economic assistance to North Korea after the issue of Japanese abductees in North Korea and Pyongyang's nuclear and missile development programs are resolved comprehensively and diplomatic relations between the two countries are normalized.

It is not known what the North Korean minister told Kono.

The Kono-Ri talks took place during a banquet held for foreign ministers who will attend Saturday's meeting of the ASEAN Regional Forum, a security dialogue forum among the 10 members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations and other Asia-Pacific countries, including Japan, the United States and North Korea.
