Tokyo, Aug. 20 (Jiji Press)--Convenience store sales in Japan in July inched up 0.1 pct from a year before to 885.4 billion yen on a same-store basis, up for the second consecutive month, the Japan Franchise Association said Monday.

Sales of beverages and ice cream products were brisk amid high temperatures across the nation, but the number of customers dropped due to torrential rains in western Japan and typhoons.

Per-customer spending rose 1.9 pct to 616 yen, logging the 40th straight month of growth.

The total number of shoppers declined 1.8 pct to 1,436.89 million, falling for the 29th consecutive month.
