Hokkaido Quake Death Toll Rises to 37

Sapporo, Sept. 9 (Jiji Press)--The death toll from Thursday's strong earthquake in the northernmost Japan prefecture of Hokkaido has reached 37, with two others still missing, according to prefectural government and other sources.
Search operations are continuing around the clock in the hardest-hit municipality of Atsuma. The 72-hour window when survival chances are high closed in the small hours of Sunday.
The operations involve a total of 41,000 personnel from police, fire authorities, the Self-Defense Forces and the Japan Coast Guard.
Most of the 37 victims lived in Atsuma, where many landslides occurred.
As of 5 a.m. (8 p.m. Saturday GMT), 5,763 people were taking shelter at evacuation centers.
