Kobe, Sept. 12 (Jiji Press)--Yasuyuki Fujiwara, mayor of the city of Itami, Hyogo Prefecture, said Wednesday the city's airport will accept more flights including those on international routes from typhoon-hit Kansai International Airport, or Kansai airport, in neighboring Osaka Prefecture.
Itami airport has already been acting as an alternative to Kansai airport for up to 32 domestic flights per day using slots allocated to extra flights during the turn-of-the-year holiday season.
A local council comprising representatives from 10 municipalities surrounding Itami airport gave the nod to the transport ministry's request for the domestic airport to handle 40 more flights operated not only domestically but internationally until the international airport recovers fully, Fujiwara, head of the council, said.
He also said the operational hours of Itami airport will remain from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. to prevent noise pollution, as the council rejected the ministry's another request for an extension to 10 p.m., except in the event of flight delays.
The council plans to demand that the ministry instruct airlines to use low-noise aircraft and clarify the period for more flights at Itami airport.
