Job Magazine Helping Ex-Inmates Restart Their Lives

Society

Tokyo, Sept. 26 (Jiji Press)--Human Comedy Co. a Tokyo-based employment support company, is working to help inmates find jobs after leaving prison and redo their lives, with a magazine launched in March this year.

"Chance!!," the job information magazine exclusively for people in prison, is distributed for free to about 240 facilities across Japan, including prisons and juvenile reformatories. It is also offered directly to inmates through organizations supporting their rehabilitation.

While not a few former inmates are unable to find jobs after being released from prison and commit crimes again as a result, an official of Human Comedy said that such people "can become human resources capable of making contributions to society" by obtaining jobs and keeping working.

The magazine's third edition, which introduces 15 firms, including construction companies and restaurant operators, was published this month, with a total of 3,000 copies printed.

"We're ready to hire (former inmates) with a determination to accept the whole of their lives," the president of one of the 15 firms says in the magazine. Another says, "Let's carve out a new path together."
