Tokyo, Sept. 26 (Jiji Press)--Rubella patients reported in Japan numbered 642 between Jan. 1 and Sept. 16, up nearly sevenfold from 93 for the whole of last year, the National Institute of Infectious Diseases said Wednesday.
In the week through Sept. 16, the number came to 127, down 15 from this year's weekly high scored in the preceding week. But the weekly figure topped 100 for the second consecutive time.
The cumulative number of patients in Tokyo and the neighboring prefectures of Chiba, Kanagawa and Saitama continued to account for over 70 pct of the year-to-date total.
The number of patients reported between Jan. 1 and Sept. 16 stood at 196 in Tokyo, 161 in Chiba, 68 in Kanagawa and 42 in Saitama.
Shiga and Ehime each had two patients in the latest week, their first cases this year. This lifted the number of prefectures with reported rubella patients this year to 36.
