Japan Designates Hokkaido Quake, 3 Typhoons as Serious Disasters

Tokyo, Sept. 28 (Jiji Press)--The Japanese government designated on Friday a major earthquake that struck the northernmost prefecture of Hokkaido earlier this month and three recent typhoons as disasters with extreme severity.

The designation will raise the proportion of local governments' reconstruction costs covered by state subsidies by 10-20 percentage points.

An ordinance for the designations will take effect on Monday.

"We hope the affected local governments will be able to work swiftly on disaster reconstruction without financial worries," Hachiro Okonogi, minister for disaster management, told a press conference.

In all areas of Hokkaido affected by the Sept. 6 earthquake, the central government will support local government efforts to rebuild public works facilities, including roads and waterways, as well as schools and farmland.
