Yamaguchi, Sept. 29 (Jiji Press)--A 30-year-old man who escaped from a police station in Osaka Prefecture, western Japan, in August was detained in Yamaguchi Prefecture, about 360 kilometers away, on Saturday.

The man, Junya Hida, was arrested on suspicion of shoplifting at a roadside rest area in the Yamaguchi city of Shunan, after being on the run for 48 days, the Yamaguchi prefectural police department said.

A bicycle that may have been used by Hida was discovered where he was detained, police sources said.

Hida, charged with rape and other crimes, escaped from a visiting room of a detention facility in the Tondabayashi police station after a meeting with his lawyer on the night of Aug. 12.

He broke an acrylic plate that divided the detainee and the visitor and fled, but the police did not become aware of his escape until about two hours later.
