Suspected Child Abuse Victims Rise to Record in Jan.-June
Tokyo, Oct. 4 (Jiji Press)--The number of children reported by police to child consultation centers for suspected abuse in Japan hit a record high in January-June, the National Police Agency said Thursday.
The NPA referred 37,113 children under 18 to child consultation centers, up 6,851 from a year before.
Rising public awareness of child abuse has boosted the number of reports to police, according to the agency.
The number of children believed to have suffered psychological abuse, such as verbal assaults, was the largest at 26,415. Of them, more than 60 pct were suspected of being exposed to domestic violence between others, mainly parents.
Physical abuse was suspected for 6,792 children.
