Japan Child Porn Cases Hit Record High in Jan.-June

Tokyo, Oct. 4 (Jiji Press)--The number of child pornography cases detected by Japanese police in January-June this year increased by 281 from a year before to a record 1,423, a National Police Agency survey showed Thursday.

Child pornography victims under 18 totaled 615 in the six-month period.

Of the victims, about 40 pct were deceived or intimidated into taking nude selfies and sending them to the perpetrators.

The number of child pornography offenders rose by 277 to 1,053, topping 1,000 for the first time ever on a first-half basis.

Of the victims, 234 were high school students, 212 were junior high school students and 138 were elementary school children.
