Uniqlo Operator's Annual Sales Top 2 T. Yen for 1st Time
Tokyo, Oct. 11 (Jiji Press)--Fast Retailing Co. <9983>, the operator of Uniqlo casual clothing stores, said Thursday that its annual group sales rose 14.4 pct year on year to 2,130,060 million yen in the year to August, topping 2 trillion yen for the first time ever.
Operating profit grew 33.9 pct to 236,212 million yen, and net profit climbed 29.8 pct to 154,811 million yen, both hitting record highs as well, thanks to brisk sales abroad.
The company, established in Yamaguchi Prefecture, western Japan, has successfully continued to expand its operations, partly on the back of such popular products as fleece clothing for winter. The sales in the latest year were about 150 times the 14.3 billion yen in the year to August 1992.
Overseas sales at the Uniqlo division in the latest year rose 26.6 pct from the previous year to 896,321 million yen, while domestic sales expanded 6.7 pct to 864,778 million yen. Overseas Uniqlo sales exceeded domestic sales for the first time.
Same-store sales increased in China, Southeastern Asia and South Korea, and operating profit in Europe doubled, while Uniqlo outlets in Japan enjoyed strong sales of "Heattech" thermal underwear in winter and "AIRism" functional underwear in summer amid scorching heat wave.
