Abe to Ask China to Lend More Giant Pandas

Tokyo, Oct. 18 (Jiji Press)--Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is expected to ask Beijing to lend more giant pandas to Japan during his trip to China from Oct. 25, informed sources said Thursday.

Abe is seen making the request at a meeting with Premier Li Keqiang on Oct. 26.

Giant pandas have been a symbol of the two countries' friendship since the first ones, Kan Kan and Ran Ran, arrived in Japan in 1972.

Some Japanese local governments are asking China to lend giant pandas.

If more giant pandas come to Japan, "it will be widely appreciated," since many people adore pandas, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga told a news conference.
