Japan Air Conditioner Shipments Hit Record High in April-Sept.

Tokyo, Oct. 23 (Jiji Press)--Air conditioner shipments in Japan in April-September rose 7.3 pct from a year before to 6,142,000 units, the highest level for any fiscal first-half period since comparable data became available in fiscal 1972, industry data showed Tuesday.

The increase was due to the scorching summer heat, the Japan Electrical Manufacturers' Association said. Air conditioner demand remained robust even in August and September after shipments peaked out, a JEMA official said.

Strong air conditioner shipments pushed up the total value of white goods shipments, including refrigerators and washing machines, by 2.8 pct to 1,308.3 billion yen, marking the highest level for any fiscal first-half period over the past decade and the fourth consecutive first-half rise.

In value, shipments of air conditioners jumped 7.8 pct to 492.5 billion yen and those of refrigerators inched up 0.4 pct to 251.8 billion yen. Washing machine shipments rose 3.6 pct to 170.3 billion yen.
