Sales Start for New Year's Postcards, Last for Heisei Era

Tokyo, Nov. 1 (Jiji Press)--Ahead of the last New Year during the current Heisei era, Japan Post Co. launched sales of New Year's lottery postcards for 2019 across Japan on Thursday.

The Heisei era, which started in 1989, is set to end on April 30 next year with Emperor Akihito's abdication.

"There are many different kinds of 'nengajo' (New Year greeting cards)," Sho Sakurai, a member of male pop group Arashi, said at a sales launch event at the JP Tower in the Marunouchi district in central Tokyo.

"I want people to enjoy the last nengajo in the Heisei era," Sakurai said.

Nozomi Okuhara, a female badminton player who also joined the event, said the next year will be an important year to achieve her goals. She said she will send nengajo "to show my continuing gratitude."
