Above-Limit Arsenic Detected in BCG Vaccine Solution in Japan

Tokyo, Nov. 6 (Jiji Press)--All randomly sampled saline solution products for BCG vaccines contained arsenic exceeding Japan's standard, the health ministry has revealed.
Still, the saline, made by Japan BCG Laboratory, is safe to use as a solution to the dried vaccines, the ministry said.
According to the ministry, the company conducted random sampling inspections of normal saline contained in ampules that were shipped in sets with dried BCG vaccine ampules. The check covered saline ampules in 35 lots, with each lot having 59,000 ampules.
As a result, all samples contained beyond-the-limit levels of arsenic, a potentially deadly substance. The oldest saline products checked were made two years ago.
The inspections came after the ministry was informed of the initial detection of arsenic in the solution and suspended shipments of products in question in August.
