Osaka, Nov. 7 (Jiji Press)--Osaka Governor Ichiro Matsui on Wednesday underscored a wish to spark life science innovations by winning the western Japan city's bid to host the 2025 World Exposition.

The Kansai western region is a hub for life sciences, Matsui said in an interview with Jiji Press, noting that Osaka is aiming to host an expo themed on health and longevity.

"If innovations are made through the Expo (in Osaka), life sciences will be a pillar industry in Kansai," Matsui said.

The 2025 Expo bid winner will be decided by vote at a general assembly of the Bureau International des Expositions, or BIE, on Nov. 23. Osaka's rivals are Ekaterinburg in Russia and Baku in Azerbaijan.

While expressing some confidence about winning the bid, Matsui said he cannot be optimistic.
