Prices of 10 Salt Products to Go Up in Next April
Tokyo, Nov. 13 (Jiji Press)--The Salt Industry Center of Japan has said that it will raise the prices of 10 of its 15 products, including salt used in households, for shipment from April 1, 2019.
The markups will be implemented, for the second time since the end of salt monopoly by the government in 1997, due to soaring prices of fuel, used to boil seawater, and of logistics, the center said.
Although the latest hikes were carried out in 2016, it will be the first time in some 27 years that prices for such a variety of salt products, including popular household names, will go up.
According to the center, the price of a one-kilogram bag of salt will jump from the current 116 yen to 134 yen, that of a one-kilogram bag of refined salt from 136 yen to 161 yen and that of a 2-kilogram bag of salt for pickles from 252 yen to 289 yen.
The 10 products will see their prices raised by 6-25 pct.
