Mortar Shell Flies outside Training Area in Japan
Otsu, Shiga Pref., Nov. 14 (Jiji Press)--A mortar shell fired by a Japanese Ground Self-Defense Force unit during an exercise flew outside a training area in Takashima in the western prefecture of Shiga on Wednesday afternoon by mistake, officials said.
The shell from the GSDF's Aibano training area landed on a road and asphalt pieces from the road hit a car parked nearby, breaking its left-side rear window, police and the GSDF said.
No one was injured in the incident that occurred at around 1:20 p.m. (4:20 a.m. GMT), including a 71-year-old man who was inside the car.
A shell was found some 40 meters from the car.
The GSDF unit from the Shinodayama camp in Izumi in nearby Osaka Prefecture was conducting the exercise using 81-millimeter mortars.
