KDDI to Discontinue 3G Services in March 2022

Tokyo, Nov. 16 (Jiji Press)--KDDI Corp. <9433> said Friday it will discontinue its third-generation, or 3G, mobile phone services at the end of March 2022 because of the dwindling number of users of such phones in Japan.

Users of KDDI's 3G phones will need to switch to devices using the fourth-generation Long-Term Evolution, or 4G-LTE, mobile technology.

The move reflects KDDI's aim to manage frequencies efficiently ahead of the start of fifth-generation, or 5G, mobile services in 2020.

KDDI, the operator of "au" mobile services, plans to encourage users of 3G phones to switch to smartphones by launching a campaign with discounts.

Of Japan's three major mobile carriers, NTT Docomo Inc. <9437> also plans to end its 3G services, around the middle of the 2020s.
