NHK Mulling 2.5 Pct Viewer Fee Cut in FY 2020

Tokyo, Nov. 21 (Jiji Press)--Japan Broadcasting Corp. (NHK) is considering cutting its television viewer fees by 2.5 pct in fiscal 2020, it was learned on Wednesday.

By keeping the fees unchanged when the consumption tax rate will be increased to 10 pct from the current 8 pct in October 2019, the public broadcaster will study the idea of lowering the fee levels effectively in two rounds, informed sources said.

The size of the effective two-stage fee cut will be equivalent to about 4.5 pct of its total viewer fee revenue, according to the sources.

The monthly fees for a terrestrial TV broadcast subscription contract paid by bank transfer or credit card will fall by dozens of yen from the current level of 1,260 yen.

The NHK leadership team will submit the fee reduction plan to the broadcaster's Board of Governors on Tuesday at the earliest, according to the sources.
