3 of 4 Major Japan Dept. Store Firms Log Higher Sales in Nov.

Tokyo, Dec. 3 (Jiji Press)--Three of Japan's four major department store operators posted year-on-year growth in same-store sales in November, preliminary data from the companies showed Monday.

Demand for luxury goods was brisk from wealthy customers and foreign visitors, while sales of winter clothes such as scarves and coats were sluggish due to relatively warm weather.

J. Front Retailing Co. <3086>, which runs Daimaru and Matsuzakaya stores, saw its sales rise 1.7 pct, mainly thanks to a 5.0 pct increase at its Daimaru Tokyo outlet, where many foreign tourists shop.

Sales rose 0.2 pct at Isetan Mitsukoshi Holdings Ltd. <3099>, and 0.3 pct at Sogo & Seibu Co., a unit of Seven & i Holdings Co. <3382>.

Sales dropped 0.5 pct at Takashimaya Co. <8233>.
