2 U.S. Marine Aircraft Crash Midair off Japan

Tokyo, Dec. 6 (Jiji Press)--A U.S. Marine Corps F/A-18 fighter jet and KC-130 air tanker crashed during an aerial refueling training mission off Japan early Thursday morning.

The aircraft, both from the Marine Corps air base in Iwakuni, Yamaguchi Prefecture, western Japan, were "involved in a mishap" off the coast of Japan around 2 a.m. (5 p.m. Wednesday GMT), the Marine Corps in Okinawa Prefecture, southern Japan, said.

Search and rescue operations by U.S. forces and Japanese authorities are under way. "The circumstances of the mishap are currently under investigation," the Marine Corps said.
