42 Injured in Explosion at Sapporo Eatery
Sapporo, Dec. 16 (Jiji Press)--An explosion at an "izakaya" eatery in Sapporo, capital of Hokkaido, northernmost Japan, left 42 people injured, including one seriously, on Sunday.
The injured people were sent to hospital, local police said. Their injuries are not life-threatening, according to the police.
After the explosion occurred at around 8:30 p.m. (11:30 a.m. GMT), the two-story building that housed the eatery in the city's Toyohira Ward was engulfed in flames. With more than 40 vehicles including fire engines mobilized, the fire was brought under control after about three hours.
The building, which also housed two businesses including a real estate company, was heavily damaged, according to the police. The blast also caused damage to the neighborhood, the police said.
The seriously injured individual was a man in his 30s who work for the real estate company. He suffered burns on his face.
