Number of Visitors to Japan Tops 30 M. for First Time

Politics

Tokyo, Dec. 18 (Jiji Press)--The number of visitors to Japan this year topped 30 million on Tuesday, marking the first-ever annual figure above that mark.

The number compared with 10.36 million for the whole of 2013.

Recent sharp growth in visitors to Japan reflects eased visa requirements, a weaker yen and an increase in flight services by low-cost carriers.

The annual number appears to be on course to reach the government's target of 40 million in 2020, when the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics will be held.

Problems are occurring, however, such as increasing frustration among residents of tourist areas due to the surging number of foreign visitors.
