Tokyo, Jan. 10 (Jiji Press)--Sales of imported foreign-brand vehicles in Japan grew to 309,405 units last year, the second highest annual level on record after some 324,000 units sold in 1996, industry data showed Thursday.

The 2018 sales rose 1.1 pct from the previous year, marking the third straight annual increase, the Japan Automobile Importers Association said.

Imported foreign-brand vehicles accounted for a record 9.2 pct of total new vehicles sales in Japan, excluding minivehicles with engine displacements of up to 660 cc. The share edged up 0.2 percentage point year on year.

Demand was particularly strong for SUVs with unique designs and environmentally friendly vehicles powered by clean diesel engines.

Luxury models priced between 4 million yen and 10 million yen also enjoyed strong sales.
