Japan Beer, Quasi-Beer Shipments Hit Record Low for 14th Yr

Tokyo, Jan. 16 (Jiji Press)--Beer and quasi-beer shipments in Japan in 2018 fell 2.5 pct from the previous year, hitting a record low for the 14th straight year, data from five major brewers showed Wednesday.

The drop reflected higher prices of beer for use at drinking places stemming from higher costs and a decrease in restaurant visits in summer due to blistering heat.

Another negative factor was a demand shift to canned "chuhai" spirits priced lower than beer.

The overall shipments totaled 393.9 million cases. Each contains the equivalent of 20 633-milliliter bottles.

Beer shipments fell 5.2 pct to 193.91 million cases, down for the third consecutive year.
