Visitors to Japan Total 31.19 M in 2018
Tokyo, Jan. 16 (Jiji Press)--The estimated number of visitors to Japan in 2018 grew 8.7 pct from the previous year to 31,191,900, the Japan National Tourism Organization said Wednesday.
The pace of growth slowed in the second half due to effects from a series of natural disasters. But the annual total marked an all-time high for the sixth consecutive year on the back of an increased number of flights by low-cost carriers and other reasons.
The visitor number looks on course to reach the government's target of 40 million in 2020, when strong growth is expected thanks to the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics.
By country or region, visitors from mainland China accounted for the largest share at 8.38 million, up 13.9 pct, followed by South Korea at 7.53 million, up 5.6 pct, and Taiwan at 4.75 million, up 4.2 pct.
The number of visitors from the United States and Australia continued to rise steadily, up 11.0 pct and 11.6 pct, respectively. Europeans also increased, with visitors from Russia up 22.7 pct.
