Nomura, Carlyle Eyeing Orion Breweries Purchase

Tokyo, Jan. 18 (Jiji Press)--Japan's Nomura Holdings Inc. <8604> and U.S. investment firm The Carlyle Group are considering jointly buying Orion Breweries Ltd., a beer manufacturer based in Japan's southernmost prefecture of Okinawa, informed sources said Friday.

The purchase price is seen reaching tens of billions of yen, according to the sources.

By bringing Orion under their wing, Nomura and Carlyle aim to strengthen the brewery's overseas operations.

Currently, Japan's Asahi Breweries Ltd., which entered an alliance with Orion in 2002, is the top shareholder in the Okinawa-based unlisted company, with a stake of 10 pct.

While maintaining the Asahi-Orion alliance, Nomura and Carlyle plan to buy the remaining Orion shares from individual shareholders and others, the sources said.
