Koreeda's "Shoplifters" Nominated for Academy Award

Los Angeles, Jan. 22 (Jiji Press)--Japanese director Hirokazu Koreeda's "Manbiki Kazoku" (Shoplifters) has been nominated for the best foreign-language film in the 91st Academy Awards, it was announced Tuesday.

Its contenders include Mexican director Alfonso Cuaron's "Roma," also nominated in nine other categories.

The winner will be announced on Feb. 24.

Shoplifters, which stars Lily Franky and the late Kirin Kiki, portrays people living in an obscure corner of society who share a bond going beyond the boundary of family.

The film won the Palme d'Or award at the 71st Cannes Film Festival in May last year.
