Hitachi to Cease Production of Wind Turbine Generators
Tokyo, Jan. 25 (Jiji Press)--Hitachi Ltd. <6501> said Friday it will cease production of wind turbine generators, to put more focus on maintenance services and technology to manage power generation equipment.
Hitachi will expand wind turbine generator procurement from major German supplier Enercon GmbH.
In line with the move, the Japanese heavy machinery maker lowered its sales target for its renewable energy business for fiscal 2021, which ends in March 2022, from 400 billion yen to 100 billion yen.
Hitachi has been producing about 100 relatively small wind turbine generators a year at a plant in Hitachi, Ibaraki Prefecture, eastern Japan, while procuring large wind turbine generators from Enercon through a subsidiary.
The Japanese company will switch to full procurement from Enercon in view of profitability amid the upsizing of wind turbine generators worldwide due to market expansion.
