Japan White Goods Shipments Hit 22-Year High in 2018

Tokyo, Jan. 28 (Jiji Press)--White goods shipments in Japan in 2018 jumped 4.1 pct from the previous year to 2,445.2 billion yen, hitting their highest level since 1996, an industry group said Monday.

The growth was mainly due to soaring demand for air conditioners amid torrid heat last summer, the Japan Electrical Manufacturers' Association said.

Air conditioner shipments rose 9.4 pct to 790.9 billion yen. In volume, shipments increased 8.1 pct to 9.65 million units, marking their highest level since comparable data became available in 1972 and the third consecutive year of increase.

Shipments of refrigerators and washing machines were also strong. Large models were popular due to an increase in the number of dual-income households, while demand for smaller models was also brisk thanks to a rise in the number of elderly single households.

Whether the strength of white goods shipments will continue depends on manufacturers' ability to meet diversified consumer needs.
