Domestic Output by Major Japan Makers Up for 2nd Year
Tokyo, Jan. 30 (Jiji Press)--Eight major Japanese automakers' combined domestic production grew 0.5 pct from the previous year to 9,236,859 units in 2018, up for the second consecutive year, data from the companies showed Wednesday.
Five makers, including Honda Motor Co. <7267>, posted output growth. Honda saw a 9.0 pct increase to 891,248 units, with its N-Box minivehicle attracting robust demand.
Mazda Motor Corp.'s <7261> domestic production rose 2.6 pct to 996,264 units despite a temporary halt in plant operations caused by torrential summer rains in western Japan.
Mitsubishi Motors Corp.'s <7211> output surged 16.7 pct to 676,317 units, thanks to popularity of the newly launched Eclipse Cross sport utility vehicle.
Meanwhile, Toyota Motor Corp. <7203> suffered a 1.6 pct setback to 3,138,751 units.
