Cultural Festival to Join List of Events Attended by Emperor

Tokyo, Jan. 31 (Jiji Press)--The national cultural festival will join the list of major Japanese regional events that the Emperor and the Empress attend every year, the Imperial Household Agency said Thursday.

The change will be made after Crown Prince Naruhito succeeds Emperor Akihito in May, Shinichiro Yamamoto, grand steward of the agency, told a regular news conference.

With the addition, the number of major regional events attended by the couple will increase to four from the current three--the national tree-planting festival, the national sports festival and the national marine festival.

The national cultural festival is one of the seven major regional events currently attended by the Crown Prince and Crown Princess Masako.

Yamamoto said he believes that the addition will be looked upon favorably by the Crown Prince as he has taken part in it since its start.
