Mos Food Switching to Paper Cutlery

Tokyo, Feb. 1 (Jiji Press)--Major Japanese hamburger chain operator Mos Food Services Inc. <8153> has said it will switch from plastic to paper cutlery for takeout food at its directly run outlets, joining the growing efforts to tackle the issue of ocean plastic waste.

The firm will implement the initiative on a trial basis in February at five restaurants in Tokyo and nearby prefectures, aiming to introduce the move at all of its some 250 directly operated outlets in Japan by 2020, according to its announcement on Thursday.

The Mos Burger chain operator will consider shifting to paper cutlery also at some 1,100 franchise outlets.

For eat-in customers, Mos Food offers stainless steel cutlery.

Among other Japanese companies, Skylark Holdings Co. <3197> has stopped the use of plastic straws at all of some 1,360 outlets of its Gusto restaurant chain.
