Sompo Japan Nipponkoa to Use AI to Determine Car Accident Fault
Newsfrom JapanEconomy Science Technology
Tokyo, Feb. 8 (Jiji Press)--Sompo Japan Nipponkoa Insurance Inc. said Friday that it will use artificial intelligence to determine fault percentages for car accidents, starting as early as this year.
The use of AI is expected to shorten the time between an accident and an insurance payout to some one to two weeks from about two months at present, officials at the Sompo Holdings Inc. <8630> unit said.
Sompo Japan Nipponkoa will be the first nonlife insurer in the country to use AI to determine the fault shares, the officials said.
Using data from drive recorders and the Global Positioning System, AI will analyze vehicle speeds, the position of related objects and the surrounding environment at the time of an accident.
AI will then calculate the fault percentages by cross-checking the analyses with data on past accidents and court precedents.
