Tokyo, Feb. 15 (Jiji Press)--Major convenience store chain Lawson Inc. <2651> said Friday that a smartphone-based electronic payment service will be available in its stores throughout Japan by March.

Lawson started the service, in which customers scan products' barcodes and pay for the items with their smartphones, in April last year.

Currently, the service is available in 58 stores located in six prefectures in the Kanto eastern region, including Tokyo, and the central prefecture of Niigata.

Lawson will add stores in the Kinki and Chugoku western regions, as well as the Kyushu southwestern region, to the list on Feb. 22.

The service will also be introduced at outlets in the Chubu central and Tohoku northeastern regions as well as the northern prefecture of Hokkaido on March 1.
