London, Feb. 18 (Jiji Press)--Honda Motor Co. <7267> plans to close its Swindon plant in southern Britain in 2022, Sky News reported Monday.

The Japanese automaker could announce the closure plan as soon as Tuesday, according to the British television report.

The reported closure plan comes as Britain is divided over its March 29 exit from the European Union. But Sky News said Brexit is not believed to be a direct factor prompting Honda to end vehicle production in the country.

On Feb. 3, another major Japanese carmaker, Nissan Motor Co. <7201>, announced the cancellation of its plan to produce the X-Trail SUV at a plant in northeastern Britain.

Honda is likely to transfer the operations at the Swindon factory to a plant in Japan, while maintaining its European headquarters located near London, according to the television.
