Economy

Tokyo, Feb. 19 (Jiji Press)--Tokyo Electric Power Co. Holdings Inc. <9501> and telecommunications carrier KDDI Corp. <9433> said Tuesday they have formed an alliance to sell electricity and city gas to households.

Through the tie-up, KDDI hopes to curb communications service contract cancellations, while TEPCO Energy Partner Inc., TEPCO's electricity and gas retail unit, aims to increase the number of households using its energy services.

From Thursday, KDDI will offer TEPCO group electricity and gas plans for "au" mobile phone subscribers that will provide discounts of up to about 9 pct if they pay the au charges together with the electricity and gas bills.

The maximum 9 pct discount will last only a year, with the rate set to drop to 5 pct from the next year.

Part of the discounts will be given in the form of reward points for au users that can be used to pay their mobile phone fees.
