Mito, Ibaraki Pref., Feb. 20 (Jiji Press)--The Ibaraki prefectural government in eastern Japan said Wednesday that it will launch a bid for a giant panda loan from China in fiscal 2019.
The prefecture, near Tokyo, will set up an expert panel to study how to raise and breed the animal, expecting a loan to Kamine Zoo in the city of Hitachi, the largest zoo in Ibaraki.
It has booked related expenses in its initial draft budget for the year starting April.
Ibaraki and China enjoy favorable relations. Hitachi Ltd. <6501>, which runs many plants in Ibaraki, have some 150 business establishments in China. A flight to and from Shanghai has opened at Ibaraki Airport.
The prefectural government hopes to further deepen its ties with China, by utilizing the technological capabilities at the science city of Tsukuba in Ibaraki to contribute to the breeding of pandas.
