More JR East Train Cars to Have Security Cameras
Tokyo, March 5 (Jiji Press)--East Japan Railway Co. <9020>, or JR East, said Tuesday that it will sharply increase the number of its train cars equipped with security cameras in the run-up to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics.
JR East will install security cameras in all cars to be manufactured from now and in some 8,500 existing cars, including those for Shinkansen bullet trains, by July 2020.
Security cameras will also be introduced in cabins for drivers and conductors on some 2,500 existing non-Shinkansen train cars.
At the end of this month, the proportion of Shinkansen and other train cars with security cameras will reach 10 pct of the overall cars subject to the upgrade, the company said.
Also by July 2020, some 5,500 security cameras at ticket gates and on platforms at some 110 key JR East stations, and cameras at facilities located along its railway lines will be networked and monitored intensively by a dedicated department.
