Odano Eyed as Grand Chamberlain to New Emperor, Empress
Tokyo, March 8 (Jiji Press)--The Japanese government is planning to appoint Nobutake Odano, grand master of Crown Prince Naruhito's household, as grand chamberlain to the new Emperor and Empress, government sources said Friday.
According to the sources, Odano, 71, is likely to serve as the top aide to the Crown Prince and Crown Princess Masako once the Crown Prince becomes the new Emperor on May 1.
The government is moving ahead with a proposal to appoint Chikao Kawai, 66, the current grand chamberlain to Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko, as grand chamberlain to the new Emperor Emeritus and Empress Emerita, a position which will be newly established with the Emperor's abdication.
Attestation ceremonies for the two are expected to be held on May 1.
The grand master is the head of the Board of the Crown Prince's Household, which supports the Crown Prince and his family.
