Small Biz Lagging in System Preparations for New Era Name

Tokyo, March 14 (Jiji Press)--Small businesses are lagging in preparing their information systems for an era name change, with 24 pct yet to check where they use Japanese era names in their systems, a government survey showed Thursday.
The proportion is higher than 20 pct among the total companies surveyed, also including big businesses, according to the industry ministry survey.
It is necessary to confirm where companies use Japanese era names, such as the current Heisei, in their information systems before preparing them for the era name change at the time of the Imperial succession slated for May 1.
Accounting and other systems using Japanese era names may cause financial settlement and other problems unless they are updated to accept the new era name.
The survey showed that 63 pct of all respondents have already finished their checks for the use of Japanese era names in their systems, while 17 pct said such work is in progress.
