Tokyo, March 15 (Jiji Press)--Subaru Enterprise Co. <9632> has said that it will close the movie theater Yurakucho Subaru-za in Tokyo's busy Yurakucho area in mid-October after 53 years of business.
The subsidiary of film distributer Toho Co. <9602> found it difficult for the aging theater with only one screen to survive competition from cinema complexes in the neighborhood.
The 270-seat theater, which opened in 1966, is the successor to Japan's first theater for first-run Western movies, Marunouchi Subaru-za, which was destroyed by fire.
Yurakucho Subaru-za has screened mainly U.S. and French movies, such as "Easy Rider" and Snoopy-related works.
Subaru Enterprise will terminate its movie business to focus on road repair and cleaning service operations.
