Japanese Convenience Store Sales Rise 2 Pct in Feb.

Economy

Tokyo, March 20 (Jiji Press)--Convenience store sales in Japan rose 2.0 pct in February from a year before to 751.3 billion yen on a same-store basis, marking their fourth straight month of increase, the Japan Franchise Association said Wednesday.

Cigarette sales grew after the effect of last October's tax increase waned. Ticket sales were also strong.

But food sales were sluggish after consumers in the Hokuriku central region stocked up on processed foods due to heavy snow a year before.

The number of customers edged up 0.1 pct, the first increase in four months. Per-customer spending rose 1.9 pct to 636 yen, the fourth consecutive month of increase.
