New York, March 21 (Jiji Press)--The first New York outlet of the "Pepper Lunch" Japanese steakhouse chain opened in the Broadway area on Thursday.

The chain is under the wing of Tokyo-based Pepper Food Service Co. <3053>, which opened the first New York outlet of the "Ikinari Steak" restaurant chain of the same group in 2017.

The U.S. unit of Pepper Food announced in February this year the closing of seven of 11 Ikinari Steak outlets in New York, apparently due to poor profitability. The unit decided to change two of the four remaining outlets into Pepper Lunch restaurants.

Pepper Lunch restaurants adopt a system in which customers finish cooking their own meat on hot iron plates. The system is expected to help shorten the serving time and increase service efficiency, according to the unit.

Pepper Food Service President Kunio Ichinose said he believes having opened as many as 11 restaurants in Manhattan, which is a small area, was a factor behind the Ikinari Steak chain's sluggish performance there.
