Reiwa Picked as Name of Japan's Next Era
Tokyo, April 1 (Jiji Press)--"Reiwa" has been chosen as the name of Japan's next era, succeeding the current Heisei, the Japanese government announced Monday, ahead of the upcoming Imperial succession.
Japan will introduce the new era name on May 1, when Crown Prince Naruhito accedes to the throne, following the abdication of his father, Emperor Akihito, on April 30.
Reiwa was derived from "Manyoshu," the oldest collection of "waka" Japanese poems.
This is the first time that the name of the country's era has been picked from Japanese classical literature.
At a press conference, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga displayed a calligraphy of the new era name written in kanji.
