Calendar Makers, Japan Mint Rushing to Deal with Era Change

Osaka, April 2 (Jiji Press)--Japanese calendar and seal makers and the Japan Mint are rushing to deal with the forthcoming era name change after the government on Monday announced the new name, Reiwa.

Reiwa will become the country's era name when Crown Prince Naruhito accedes to the throne May 1, replacing Heisei, which started in 1989 and is set to end upon Emperor Akihito's abdication April 30.

Shinnippon Calendar Co., based in Osaka, western Japan, started creating products to commemorate the new era immediately after the announcement.

The number of orders the company has received for a desk calendar starting from May totals some 20,000, four times the expected level. The calendar will hit the shelves around April 20.

Takao Miyazaki, 30, is in charge of the production of the commemorative products. His grandfather helped make the first Heisei calendar at the company.
