Beijing, April 3 (Jiji Press)--The Chinese government will appoint Vice Foreign Minister Kong Xuanyou as successor to its longtime ambassador to Japan, informed sources said Wednesday.

Kong, 59, has long work experience in Japan and is fluent in Japanese, just like the current ambassador to Japan, Cheng Yonghua, 64.

The planned appointment of the Japan expert shows China's intention to improve relations with Tokyo, a Japanese government official said.

Kong, Korean-Chinese from the northeastern province of Heilongjiang, studied Japanese at Shanghai International Studies University.

He worked as minister-counsellor at the Chinese embassy in Japan, Chinese ambassador to Vietnam, head of the Foreign Ministry's Asian Affairs Department and assistant foreign minister.
